DFI day 4 9 April 2020 Dealing With Data

The third of the Manaaiakalani philosphy is to SHARE.  Sharing has been around since the beginning of time. In 2005 the world of sharing changed with the invention of new sharing platforms like you-tube and bebo.  The catch phrase for these were about sharing

In this time of 'lock-down' - sharing has adapted and is more important for people.
An authentic audience is someone who can choose to look or listen to you.  They could change the channel or move on if they wanted to.  The students who chose to come to our online learning sessions will be an authentic audience as they have chosen to come to the lesson.
We learnt about Google forms which we can add video, pictures  or make into a quiz.  I made a very simple.  Here is the one I made.  Here is the link to the actual form.
My Maps We also had a play with My Maps.  I created a map showing a few of the places we went in Europe.
Here it is here

 Google Sheets.

WOW I learnt some amazing stuff here.  I learnt how to use the hand to fix some columns or rows when you scroll.  Very useful when using a large table.
I also learnt that if you highlight a number of columns, you can drag one to resize them to all.
The best four things in Google Sheets were:

  1. Conditional Formating. You can use this to colour different cells.  This is a job that has taken me ages in the past.  I can see it being used for students below, at or above in particular areas
  2. Protecting cells and ranges.  You get to this from Menu , data, protected cells.  I will use this on my hand in sheet to enable students to only access their line.  I hope this will transfer across to new sheets when I make a copy of one as it will be a huge job to set up
  3. Auto fill, rather than typing
  4. 4. setting up a filter view (eg just chosing the boys to be displayed, or the students with a certain score)

We produced a google sheet which showed how many blogs a student posted each month.  We then created a chart and put this into a google drawing.  It is really important that we insert the drawing from the sheet into the drawing rather than taking a screenshot of the drawing.  This would be a really good activity for the students to do.

  1. Kia ora. Gosh Sue, you picked up so much from today. Sharing is nothing new as you said, but the way we can share has really been amped up with the opportunities that are now available to us. I am really excited to see that you are thinking of ways to use these tools with your learners. I look forward to them sharing their learning using these new tools on their blogs.

  2. Hi there Sue! I can see now that I am going to have to figure out how to add all the detail that you have to your blog - it looks great! The content also serves as an effective reminder of what we have covered in our learning. Like Nicola, I appreciate your thoughts about how you are going to apply these tools in your learning programme - especially regarding Google Sheets. Thank you for sharing!
