DFI Day 5 16 April. Collaborate- Sites

Connecting with Manaiakalani was around visible learning.   Our default should be to be visible, and we need to think about what we shouldn't make visible.  I have never looked at Manaiakalani Class on Air.  This is something I want to look at during the next week.  I think this will be helpful with how I teach my learners from home at the moment.

We had a look at lots of multi modal sites and activities which had been created by other teachers over the years.  It is important that we think of ways to make our lessons multi-modal  to engage students both behaviourally and cognitively.  We need to consider what will 'hook in' each learner and not just to think about what would be engaging for us.

I learnt quite a few things about making a site

  1. if you want to replace an image in the banner, the size should be 1000 x 250.   You change this by going into 'file' ' page setup' ' custom' 'pixels' and changing the numbers
  2. you can insert buttons onto a page
  3. you can load youtube directly into your site
  4. there is a layout button which helps to keep images in line
  5. png is to for a transparent background
  6. you can download a drawing as a png and insert it as a custom made button or image

We learnt about an extension to select a colour to match a picture, this extension is colour pic eyedropper.

The blogger tip for the day was to go into layout, main blogpost, edit, then about half way down turn on reactions and add/customise reactions.

I spent ages today making a multimodal site about Cat's Whiskers.  I didn't realise that I can embed a site within a site and therefore make the Cat's Whiskers site available for others.  I spent ages trying out the new things (like custom image on the banner) and therefore didn't get much of the site made.  It is a work in progress but I have included below.  Click on the image to go to the site.

Dorothy shared a database of T-Shaped literacy ideas, this is really useful.  Link is here

I had been getting my students to make a copy of a doc by altering the URL to say copy at the end, I learnt today that by changing the end of the URL for a slide to 'present' the slides will automatically play when the link is clicked.

So much learning in a short time and with so much else going on with my learners today.  I had a multitude of emails, which I tried to ignore and I think at the end of the day I had over 50 tabs open to sort through

  1. Kia ora Sue,
It was great working with you on Thursday. It is great to read back all of the wee things you picked up from the day. I am sure that your learners will appreciate the learning you are doing.
Reading you first paragraph, yes! Class on Air is amazing I would recommend taking the time to watch one lesson from each of the teachers - they are awesome! Maybe you could even use this as your planning and pick one of their lessons to teach to your students? That would mean that it was saving you time rather than creating more work - just a thought.
Hope that this week goes well for you!

  2. HI Sue
Good on you for taking in so much information. There are so many amazing new ideas which we only touch on so it is wonderful to read that you can see where they will come in useful in your teaching.
